Kevin Hanger
LCSW - CKevin received a Masters degree in Social Work from The University of Maryland Baltimore. He is a licensed clinical social worker in both Maryland and Virginia.
Kevin has an array of experience in the mental health field including outpatient therapy, substance use treatment,in-home and community-based counseling. Kevin specializes in treating individuals who suffer from self-esteem issues including low confidence, poor boundaries, negative self-image or self-concept, people pleasing, fear of failure, insecurities, and discomfort with self-expression.
Though poor self-esteem is not a stand-alone mental health condition, Kevin works from the standpoint that many of the concerns that drive people to come to counseling are linked to how satisfied they are with themselves and how worthy they feel. Additional specialty areas include the treatment of anxiety and depression, interpersonal and relationship issues, anger management, and stress management.
While these are within Kevin’s main wheelhouse, he is pleased to work with clients interested in learning if his approach may be a good fit for them regardless of the specific concern. Kevin has worked with several unique populations including college students, seriously mentally ill adults, individuals who are disabled, veterans, at-risk children and youth, homeless people, fellow mental health professionals, and those who identify with some part of the LGBTQIAP+ spectrum, among others.
Kevin’s approach to providing counseling involves a bit of humor, building a solid client-counselor relationship, a lot of intention, and commitment to building on the foundations of the client’s values and goals. Kevin strives to be a supportive counselor and finds great value in being an agent of change for the clients he works with.
Kevin integrates treatment methods from many different theoretical models including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills training. Kevin believes his mission is to support his fellow humans in finding ways to reach their goals, to feel well and grounded, and to be nice to themselves as much as possible.
